Songs that tell a story

  1. Story first. Write the music video's story in five beats before any lyric: start, problem, turn, climax, ending.
  2. One line = one picture. Every lyric line must describe something the camera can show. If you cannot picture it, rewrite it.
  3. Hold the title back. Do not sing the song title in every chorus. Tell the story, then reveal the title in the final chorus.
  4. Mark the singing lines. Pick 5–6 lines where the artist sings to camera (lip-sync). Everything else is dancing, wide shots or details, so lip-sync stays manageable.
  5. Generate 2–3 versions of the song and pick the one with the clearest vocal and a clean ending.
  6. Mix for phones. See phone-mix.
